Irlen® Screening
Relief from visual stress, one step at a time

What is Irlen® Syndrome?
Irlen® Syndrome (also known as Visual Stress or Scotopic Sensitivity) is a perceptual processing difficulty that can affect the way the brain interprets visual information. It is not an eye problem, but rather how the brain processes what the eyes see. Irlen® Syndrome often runs in families and is not currently identified by other standardised educational or medical tests.

Symptoms vary between individuals but can include:
-
Headaches, eye strain or fatigue when reading
-
Words that appear to move, blur, or “swim” on the page
-
Difficulty with reading, concentration, and comprehension
-
Sensitivity to bright or fluorescent lighting
-
Struggles with depth perception, driving, or sports
-
Challenges with learning, especially for children and young adults

Irlen syndrome affects:
-
14 % general population
-
46% individuals with reading or learning difficulties, including dyslexia
-
35% individuals who have suffered TBI or concussion
-
33% individuals on the autism spectrum
-
33% individuals with attention and concentration problems, including ADHD
-
individuals with medically resistant headaches and migraines (incidence data not yet available)
What is an Irlen® Screening?
An Irlen® Screening is a gentle, one-on-one assessment to identify whether visual stress may be affecting your daily life, learning, or wellbeing. During the screening, we use coloured overlays to explore how different tints can reduce distortion, improve comfort, and make reading easier. If indicators of Irlen® Syndrome are present, the next step may be an Irlen® Diagnostic Assessment, which determines the specific coloured filters or lenses that bring the most relief and clarity.
Who Can Benefit?
Irlen® Screening can help:
-
Children or adults who find reading tiring or frustrating
-
Students with learning difficulties, ADHD, or dyslexia-like symptoms
-
People who experience migraines, light sensitivity, or eye strain
-
Anyone who feels that “something isn’t quite right” with how they see text or their environment
Living with Irlen® Syndrome can impact confidence, study, work, and daily activities. Finding the right colour filter can be life-changing — reducing stress, improving focus, and opening new possibilities for learning and wellbeing.
Consider taking the Irlen Self Test and if 3 or more symptoms then consider getting a Irlen screening
